Key words: plastikós, beauty, plastic surgery, self-esteem

Introduction:

Plastic surgeon & plastic surgery … What do these terms really mean? Most people think that plastic surgeons will remove tissues from one part of the body and place it on a wound somewhere else in the body and get that wound to heal is that what plastic surgery is. Some people think that plastic surgery is about beauty, is about making people look more beautiful is that what plastic surgery is.

So at the outset let me tell you what a plastic surgery is?

The term plastic surgery is derived from the Greek word “Plastikós”. The word “Plastikós” means “to mold”, so what’s the connection between plastic surgery and molding? – The connection is that a plastic surgeon can take tissues from one part of the body, mold them, shift them and take them to other parts of the body get them to heal such that form and function can be reached and that’s why plastic surgery is called that.

How does plastic surgery affect our life? Is plastic surgery good or bad?

Plastic and cosmetic surgery are neither good nor bad. Both types of surgery have pros and cons. For example, they can benefit people medically or psychologically and help improve a person’s confidence and self-esteem. However, they also come with physical risks and may have a negative effect on mental health if people are not happy with the results or have untreated mental health conditions.

The following sections outline the benefits & risks of plastic and cosmetic surgery:

The Psychology Impact of Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery can improve a patient’s sense of self and enhance their self-confidence, which leads to a happier and healthier life.

Body image relates to self-esteem, and plastic surgery can significantly impact how people see and feel about their bodies. For some people, plastic surgery may help them to better appreciate and accept their bodies.

Rewards of Plastic Surgery

1. Healthier Lifestyle:

Surgeries such as liposuction or abdominoplasty often motivate patients to adopt better diets and fitness routines

2. Improved Vision:

Eyelid surgery can be used to fix drooping eyebrows and even dry eyes, improving patients’ appearance and their vision.

All of the above benefits can result in a longer life expectancy and a happier life.

Risks of Plastic Surgery

1. Nerve Damage:

The potential for nerve damage is present in many different types of surgical procedures. Most often the nerve damage is temporary, but in some cases it can be permanent.

2. Internal Bleeding:

All recognized bleeding points are controlled during surgery, but occasionally a blood vessel will start bleeding after wound closure. If this is severe, it may require a return to the operating there for correction.

3. Infection:

Though postoperative care includes steps to reduce the risk of infection, it remains one of the more common complications of plastic surgery. The skin infection cellulitis may occur after surgery. In some cases, infections can be internal and severe, requiring intravenous (IV) antibiotics.

4. Allergic Reaction:

You may have an unexpected allergic reaction – please let doctor know if you have any allergies to the following; surgical tape, suture materials, glues, blood products, topical preparations or injected agents.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

Reconstructive surgery repairs defects or injuries from trauma. It also restores function and a natural-looking appearance. You may need this type of surgery if you have:

1. Birth Defects

2. Burns

3. Scars that prevent natural movement

4. Severe injuries, like cuts or tears over large areas of skin.

Conclusion

Thus, we can conclude that today’s world we know that people’s appearance matters. Most of the people will judge our futures without thinking about our feelings. That is a huge problem for people who is insecure about their appearance or don’t have self-esteem. With plastic surgery people can change their futures however they want, and that is a form of freedom for me. There are some accidents that could’ve change people’s physical appearance, but we have to consider that and have empathy to those people. They suffer from these issues and if they have a chance to change that they should. That is wonderful for their mental health as well. So in total plastic surgery is necessary for some people and this is their choice, we as future doctors should be aware of that.
